The Ijaw Youth Council {IYC} Worldwide on Wesnesday morning shut down the Bayelsa State office of the Niger Delta Development Commission {NDDC} and the Mbiama axis of the East-West Road, as part of its threat to shut down the Niger Delta region.
The group had given the Federal Government a 30-day ultimatum to inaugurate a substantive board for the NDDC or risk a shutdown of the Niger Delta region. It also gave international oil companies operating in the region seven days to evacuate its personnel working at oil production sites.
On Wednesday morning, scores of youths, who flew the flags of IYC, were reported to have stopped traffic along the ever-busy East-West road causing panic among motorists and commuters.
The group embarked on the ongoing protest despite the disappearance of its President, Peter Igbifa on Tuesday morning.
NaijaNewsNow reports that Igbifa was abducted by armed masked men along the Port Harcourt International Airport Road on his way to the airport to board a flight to Abuja for a meeting.
Igbifa was said to have sent a message through his driver that the protest should continue despite his abduction.
