It was another tragic day in Imo State on Tuesday as hoodlums attacked an Anglican priest within the church premises where he lived, murder him and set his car Ablaze.
The priest, Rev Emeka Merenu was until his death, the priest-in-charge of St Andrew’s Anglican church, Ihitte Ukwa in the Orsu Local Government Area of the state.
A native of Amaorji in Nkwerre in the Nkwerre Local Government Area of the state, Rev Merenu was killed in the early hours of Tuesday.
A member of the church, who confirmed the incident, said the attackers stormed the church premises and butchered the priest.
”The priest in charge of St Andrew’s Anglican church in Ihitte Ukwa in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo state was killed this morning.
“His attackers stormed the church’s compound where he lived, butchered him and burnt his car before running away.”
On what could be the motive behind the murder of the clergy, the source said: “The church has a school at the premises. His attackers might have been angry that the slain priest was giving security protection to the students of the school who were sitting for this year’s West Africa Examinations Council for Senior Secondary schools.”
The Imo State Police Command spokesman, Michael Abattam, who confirmed the murder of the priest, said that investigation had commenced with the intention to arresting the hoodlums.
