Vehicular movement was halted on Tuesday on the Enugu-Abakaliki Highway as gunmen engage in heavy shooting around the Ezilo axis of the highway.
Though it was not immediately clear those responsible for the shootings, NaijaNewsNow had reported a renewed clash that led to the death of two persons in a boundary dispute between Ezilo and Iyionu communities in the Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
A passenger from Afam Cyprian, who was travelling to Enugu, said travelers have been stranded at Okpoto for about one hour, adding that military patrol vans were patrolling the highway but have told them not to advance.
“Many people are looking for another route to take. Some have gone back to take Afikpo road. I am looking for a way to go back to Abakaliki,” he said.
The Police spokesperson in Ebonyi, Loveth Odah confirmed the shootings, adding that the Police Commissioner, Aliyu Garba has dispatched police patrol teams to restore peace and open up the road for users.
Odah however said the shooting cannot be related to the boundary dispute as the disputed area is not close to the highway
