APC 2023 Presidential Ticket: Tinubu And The Rest Of Them

There is no doubt that the race for the 2023 general elections has indirectly kickstarted, especially the presidential election, with the speed at which potential candidates, currently called aspirants, are coming out to declare their ambitions.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and its arch-rival, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have witnessed a sudden appearance of aspirants, declaring their ambitions and ‘entertaining’ Nigerians with what they believe they have to offer the country, if they are elected.

Though, it is believed that there are many more Nigerians, still lurking in the corner, reading the mood of Nigerians, weighing their options and analysing their potential foes if they decide to throw their caps into the ring, many of those who have so far declared are believed to be more of spectators in the impending contest for the tickets of their respective parties.

Without a definite word from either the APC and the PDP on zoning of the presidential ticket to any part of the country yet, the race is open, or so it seems, as it promises to be an all comers affair as it presently stands.

Not minding or disputing the right of any Nigerian to aspire to the Presidency, and without a fixed timeline for any ambition to be declared, the rush being witnessed currently for declaration, shortly after a former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu made his, speaks volume of the seriousness and or fear many of those declaring must have entertained.

In the APC, Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, who many believed long before now of harbouring an ambition to be president, waited to be beaten by Tinubu before declaring.

Umahi, who defected from the PDP through which he was elected for both his first and second terms as governor, is believed to have left the party for the APC solely because of his presidential ambition, but somehow, he allowed the party’s National Leader, Tinubu to steal the show from him.

Coming closely behind Tinubu and Umahi, is the Chief Whip of the Senate and former Governor of Abia State, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, whose supposed declaration, was more of a reactionary move to Tinubu’s declaration.

It would be recalled that Senator Kalu has always said that he will consider running if Nigerians asked him to do so, and in his reaction to Tinubu’s announcement of his ambition, Kalu still sounded uncertain and undecided, just the way he has always been, when he said, he would ‘match Tinubu grit for grit if the APC zones the presidential ticket to the South’.

Serious contenders, from history of politics in Nigeria, don’t give conditions or wait for them to be right before plunging into the deep. They take their destinies into their hands and force conditions to be right.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu did not just steal the show, but showed he is ready and well prepared for the race for the party’s ticket, declaring that he will pursue his ambition with zeal.

For beating others coming out and about to come out, Tinubu did not just steal the initiative but has thrown spanners in the works of the camp of many who may have been nursing a secret ambition for the Presidency.

Before Tinubu’s open confirmation of his ambition, names of several South-West big weights in APC were severally thrown out there as potential presidential contenders, including the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo and Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi. Though both have not openly declared, while the VP had in the past denied, the open clamour for him to contest may not just be a fluke after all.

It is however yet to be seen if with Tinubu’s open declaration, Osinbajo and Fayemi will still find it convenient to contest the APC’s ticket against a man largely seen as their benefactor.

Fayemi’s ‘hurried’ visit to Tinubu at his Bourdillion, Lagos home shortly after the declaration may also have foreclosed any possible entry into the race by the Ekiti State governor.

With a well oiled and organised support organisations for his ambition and well reported cross country ‘consultations’, a massive goodwill among the political class, foot soldiers drumming support for his ambition off and online and with a heavy financial war chest, the race for the APC presidential ticket may just be between Tinubu and the rest of them!
