The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, on Thursday ordered the immediate disbandment of the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Satellite Offices in Lagos and Port Harcourt.
The order, according to the IGP was in connection with complaints of harassment and operating beyond their briefs by Nigerians.
Baba gave the order at his maiden meeting with Command Police Commissioners and zonal AIGs, in Abuja on Thursday, adding that the IGP Monitoring Units will be re-organised.
The order is also coming on the heels of a request by the Police Service Commission for the IGP to check the proliferation of police investigating units.
The commission, which made the request on Wednesday, said the units were bringing huge embarrassments to the force.
According to the Chairman of the commission, Musiliu Smith, there must be proper and close monitoring of police investigative units to stem the atrocities its officials committed in the line of duty.
Smith, a retired IGP, also stressed the need to quickly treat cases of misconduct by the officers to ensure that those found wanting are brought to book.
