A Standing Ovation For A Gallant Soldier: Flight Lieutenant Abayomi Dairo

On Sunday, the 18th of July, the nation was gripped with yet another news of a crashed aircraft belonging to the Nigerian Air Force, an Alpha fighter jet.

Initial reports on the crash were sketchy, as many Nigerians, who were already becoming fed up with incessant crashes involving military aircrafts in the country, prayed the news was fake and not true.

There were some form of relieve when the Air Force debunked the reports, saying it never happened, momentarily putting a lie to the report. However, on Monday, NAF confirmed the news in a statement by its spokesman, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet.

Though Nigerians had wished the crash never happened, the confirmation from Gabkwet, gave them something to cheer about, the gallantry and bravely of Flight Lieutenant Abayomi Dairo, the lone pilot of the jet and his return to safety in one piece.

According to NAF, Dairo had concluded a successful air interdiction mission between the boundaries of Zamfara and Kaduna State, and was returning to base when he came under enemy fire, leading to the crash of the aircraft.

Gabkwet further stated that the gallant pilot of the aircraft, Dairo, successfully ejected from the aircraft.

“Using his survival instincts, the pilot, who came under intense ground fire from the bandits, was able to evade them and sought refuge in nearby settlements awaiting sunset. Using the cover of darkness and his phone set for navigation, Flight Lieutenant Dairo was able to elude several bandits’ strongholds and maneuvered his way to a Nigerian Army Unit, where he was finally rescued”, the NAF statement stated further.

To appreciate and underscore the bravery of Flight Lieutenant Dairo, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Lucky Irabor, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao and other military chiefs were on hand to recieve him at the Air Force Base in Kaduna on Monday.

During the brief ceremony, General Irabor commended the pilot for the gallantry and bravery he demonstrated in the fight against banditry.

“The CDS commended the fighter pilot for his gallantry and bravery which he demonstrated in the fight against banditry. He encouraged NAF pilots to remain steadfast in the task of national security”, a statement by the Defence Headquarters stated on Monday.

The feat achieved by Flight Lieutenant Abayomi Dairo, no doubt is worthy of applause, as he did not only succeeded in carrying out his mission but also gallantly stayed alive to fight another day.

Dairo’s experience between Sunday and Monday has only brought to the front burner what the Nigerian military personnel go through to keep the country secure and safe from rampaging bandits, terrorists and other bloody criminals prowling the length and breath of Africa’s most populous nation.

Men like Flight Lieutenant Abayomi Dairo deserves applause and commendation for daily putting themselves in harm’s way in the service of the father land. We can only show them appreciation by letting them know we recognize their sacrifices, appreciate them and will continue to keep them in our prayers.
